What is Spotify?

Spotify is a popular digital music streaming service that offers users access to a vast library of songs, albums, and playlists from various artists and genres. Users can listen to music on-demand, create personalized playlists, discover new music through curated recommendations, and follow their favorite artists. Spotify is available on multiple devices, including smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart speakers, allowing users to enjoy music anytime, anywhere, with or without an internet connection.

Spotify for Artists

Spotify for Artists is a platform provided by Spotify that allows musicians and artists to manage their presence on the streaming service. It provides artists with tools and insights to understand their audience, track the performance of their music, and engage with their fans.

With Spotify for Artists, artists can:

  • Claim and verify their artist profile on Spotify.

  • Customize their artist profile with photos, bio, and links to social media.

  • Access real-time analytics and insights about their listenership, including data on streams, listeners, and demographics.

  • Promote their music through personalized playlists and editorial features.

Spotify Artist Profile Verification

To get verified on Spotify, artists need to meet certain criteria, including having music available on Spotify through a distributor or label, having an active profile, and having a significant presence or following. Once these criteria are met, artists can submit a verification request through the Spotify for Artists platform or through their distributor.

To request artist verification on Spotify, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for Spotify for Artists: If you haven't already, sign up for Spotify for Artists by visiting artists.spotify.com. You'll need to claim your artist profile and provide information about your music.

  2. Prepare your materials: Before submitting your verification request, ensure that your artist profile meets Spotify's criteria for verification. This includes having music available on Spotify through a distributor or label, having an active profile, and having a significant presence or following.

  3. Submit your request: Once you've signed up for Spotify for Artists and prepared your materials, you can submit your verification request through the Spotify for Artists platform. Look for the option to request verification and follow the instructions provided.

  4. Provide necessary information: When submitting your verification request, you may need to provide additional information about your music, your career as an artist, and any supporting materials that demonstrate your authenticity and legitimacy as an artist.

  5. Wait for review: After submitting your verification request, Spotify will review your request and determine whether to grant verification for your artist profile. This process may take some time, so be patient and check your email or notifications for updates from Spotify.

  6. Receive verification: If your verification request is approved, you'll receive a notification from Spotify, and your artist profile will be verified with a blue checkmark badge, indicating that it's an official profile.

Spotify Discovery Mode

Spotify Discovery Mode is a feature designed to help artists promote their music to a wider audience on the platform. It allows artists and their teams to influence the algorithmic recommendations that Spotify provides to listeners, increasing the likelihood of their songs being discovered by new audiences.

Through Spotify Discovery Mode, artists can allocate a portion of their royalties to promote specific tracks within Spotify's personalized playlists, such as Discover Weekly and Release Radar. By participating in Discovery Mode, artists can potentially reach millions of listeners who rely on Spotify's algorithmic playlists to discover new music.

This feature provides artists with greater control over their promotional efforts and allows them to amplify their music's visibility on the platform. However, it's important to note that participation in Discovery Mode requires a financial investment, as artists essentially pay for increased exposure by allocating a portion of their royalties to fund the promotion of their tracks within Spotify's playlists.

Artist roles in Spotify

In Spotify, there are several roles associated with artist profiles and accounts. These roles define the level of access and control individuals or teams have over an artist's presence on the platform. Here are the main roles:

  • Performed by: "Primary Artist", "Featuring Artist" and "Remixer".

  • Composed by: "Composer", "Conductor" and "Lyricist".

  • Produced by: "Producer".

  • Source: "Label".

Monetization

Spotify monetization works for artists through a combination of royalties from music streams and direct monetization features. Here's how it works:

  1. Royalties from Streams: Artists earn royalties each time their music is streamed on Spotify. These royalties are paid out based on the number of streams their music receives, and the amount per stream varies depending on factors such as the artist's contract with their record label or distributor, their share of ownership in the music, and the country in which the stream occurred. Spotify pays out a portion of its subscription and advertising revenue to rights holders in the form of these royalties.

  2. Direct Monetization Features: In addition to royalties from streams, artists can also monetize their music on Spotify through various direct monetization features. These may include merchandise sales, concert ticket sales, fan donations, and sponsorships. Spotify provides tools and integrations to help artists promote and sell their merchandise, tickets, and other products directly to their fans.

  3. Spotify for Artists: Spotify offers a platform called Spotify for Artists, which provides artists and their teams with access to analytics, promotional tools, and resources to help them grow their audience and maximize their revenue on the platform. Artists can use Spotify for Artists to track their streams, engage with fans, pitch their music for editorial playlists, and more.
