What is MixCloud?
Mixcloud is a British online streaming service that specializes in hosting and distributing radio shows, DJ mixes, podcasts, and other long-form audio content. It was founded in 2008 by Nico Perez, Nikhil Shah, and Mat Clayton and has since become a popular platform for music enthusiasts, DJs, radio stations, and podcasters to share their audio content with a global audience.
As of November 2011, Mixcloud lifted its previous limit on uploaded content size, now allowing uploads of up to 500 megabytes. Additionally, users can join Groups, which are collections of individuals with common interests, and receive updates when new content related to the Group is available.
Mixcloud provides an API that enables users to search, upload, and embed its content on other platforms and websites. Mobile apps are available for both Android and iOS devices, allowing users to access Mixcloud's content on the go.
In December 2018, Mixcloud introduced a new subscription model called "fan-to-creator," allowing subscribers to directly support their favorite artists and contribute to the licensing costs associated with the music played in their shows.
It's important to note that Mixcloud operates as a user-generated content (UGC) service, meaning that audio files are provided to Mixcloud by third parties. Mixcloud uses a content identification service to identify master sound recordings within these audio files.
