Mechanical Rights: Definition

Mechanical rights are the rights granted to a party to reproduce and distribute a copyrighted musical composition in the form of a sound recording. In simple terms, they allow someone to record a song and distribute it to the public. This includes producing physical copies like CDs or vinyl records, as well as making the music available through digital formats such as downloads and streaming. In exchange for exercising mechanical rights, the user typically pays royalties to the copyright holder of the musical composition, which are then distributed to the appropriate parties, such as songwriters, composers, and music publishers.
